Dr. Andrea Cercek is a researcher and medical oncologist at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Dr. Cerek specializes in the treatment of patients with various gastrointestinal cancers, mainly colorectal and appendix cancers, in addition to the comprehensive treatment of those patients diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. Cercek’s research is focused on the development of next-generation treatments for patients, including extensive research into molecular-based therapies as a form of treatment. In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr. Cerek also serves as an assistant professor of medicine in Joan and Sanford I. Weill Department of Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
Depending on the needs of the patient, Cercek uses a combination of both systemic chemotherapy (the more traditional approach to cancer) and regional chemotherapy, in which the drugs are applied directly to the specific region needing therapy rather than the total region. For patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, for instance, regional chemotherapy would involve application of chemotherapy drugs to the peritoneal cavity. Regional chemotherapy has proven to be a very specific and proactive approach to attacking the various cancers that many patients respond very well to.
Dr. Cercek earned her medical degree in 2004 from New York Medical College and completed her residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital before moving on to Sloan-Kettering, where she currently resides. She is board certified in internal medicine as well as medical oncology.
As of early 2018, Cercek was leading a pair of clinical trials testing the effectiveness of various combinations of chemotherapy for the treatment of colorectal cancer. She also has worked as a co-investigator in several other clinical trials, most of them involving various types, combinations, and application methods of chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy. One study in which she is involved compares the effectiveness of Pevonedistat (which inhibits a particular human protein) alone and in combination with chemotherapy for the treatment of patients with malignant mesothelioma. The results and effectiveness of that specific study are still ongoing.
Cercek’s contributions to cancer research have been published in a variety of esteemed medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association’s Oncology publication, the Journal of Surgical Oncology, Cancer Cell, and the International Journal of Radiation Oncology.
