History- Dr. William James Mayo and his brother Dr. Charles Mayo and their wives established Mayo Clinic in 1919 as a non-profit organization dedicated to excellence in patient care, research and education. Their father Dr. William Worrall Mayo started a Medical Practice in Rochester during the Civil War together with a Franciscan Sister Mother Alfred Moes, worked together with Dr. Mayo and sons and together they “envisioned a hospital, with our faith and hope and energy it will succeed”

Director– Dr. Joseph A Dearani M.D. is the Chairman of the Division of Cardiac Surgery- Dr. Dennis Wigle a cardio-thoracic surgeon is the head of a multidisciplinary group for malignant mesothelioma. Dr. Wigle is also the Chair of the Department of Thoracic Oncology.

Team– The team consists of MD’s from many specialized areas composing a multi-disciplinary group. Dr. Tobias Peikert is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, current research is centered on using a modified measles vaccine for the treatment of mesothelioma.

Dr. Shanda Blackmon M.D. is a cardio- thoracic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in addition her research centers on video assisted surgery. She is the lead investigator on the Cryosurgery Clinical Trial.

There are also experts in thoracic oncology, pathology, radiologists, that are members of the multi-disciplinary team that collaborate on mesothelioma patients care.

Affiliations- Mayo Clinic operates in Rochester Minnesota, Jacksonville Florida, Scottsdale and Phoenix Arizona.

Stats-The Mayo Clinic sees patients from all over the world it is a busy mesothelioma center. Approximately 150-200 patients are seen in consultation every year for mesothelioma primarily at their Rochester Minnesota facilities.

Research- Currently there are 6 open studies researching mesothelioma being conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The Mayo Clinic is an active participant in researching to a cure for mesothelioma. Research is an integral part of their treatment offerings for patients.

Support Services– Thousands of patients from all over the world go to Mayo Clinic annually. Most are treated on an outpatient basis.
