Mesothelioma Center Review – MD Anderson Cancer Center

Mesothelioma Center Review – MD Anderson Cancer Center

MD Anderson MesotheliomaMD Anderson Cancer Center is among the nation’s most distinguished cancer research facilities. One of the center’s primary areas of research is mesothelioma. Its innovative research program brings together the expertise of various sub-specialists in the fields of cancer and mesothelioma.

Cancers, such as mesothelioma, often necessitate a combination of therapies, treatments and procedures. Patients who come to MD Anderson Cancer Center can expect to receive expert clinical attention from a team of more than 30 medical professionals. This includes oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, pulmonologists and support professionals who work cooperatively to assess the best treatment plan for each patient. MD Anderson’s Thoracic Center has unsurpassed experience in this area – it treats more mesothelioma patients than nearly any other facility in the country.

Research teams at MD Anderson implement pioneering treatments for mesothelioma in an effort to find a cure for this aggressive cancer. Researchers are currently focusing on a number of areas, including improving diagnostic procedures for mesothelioma, developing more precise radiation therapies to spare damage to healthy cells, and introducing new agents to assist in fighting cancer. These cutting-edge research initiatives give patients the opportunity to participate in promising clinical trials.

The clinical trial program at MD Anderson offers treatment options at nearly every stage of a patient’s disease. Some of their current clinical trials include the following:

– An ongoing trial program to study whether a new treatment agent, known as brentuximab vedotin, is safe and can control the spread and progression of mesothelioma.

– A trial in its second and third phases designed to determine whether ADI-PEG 20, along with pemetrexed and cisplatin, can be used to treat mesothelioma in patients who are not candidates for surgery or radiation.

– A new clinical trial designed to determine whether pembrolizumab (MK-3475) can be used safely after radiation therapy in patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

– A phase III study to assess the safety of administering two different drug combinations for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

– A clinical research trial for patients with advanced tumors to identify the highest possible dose of ABBV-428 that can be administered either alone or as part of a combined drug regimen. ABBV-428 is being tested in humans for the first time in this trial.

In addition to its superior clinical and research programs, MD Anderson is committed to providing patients with emotional and psychological support during this process. The Department of Social Work provides services to patients and their families to help them cope with the trauma of a mesothelioma diagnosis. Social work services are free of charge and are available without a referral from another medical provider. These services include advance care planning, grief counseling, crisis intervention, support groups, and coping techniques.
