Mesothelioma Center Review – University of Chicago

University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center

University of Chicago MesotheliomaThe University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of the largest centers for the treatment of mesothelioma in the United States. Patients seeking advanced and innovative care come to the University of Chicago from all over the Midwest. The center strives to make scientific discoveries that improve treatments, prolong life expectancies, and help develop a cure for mesothelioma.

A multidisciplinary team of doctors, surgeons, oncologists and nurses focuses on the best course of treatment for each mesothelioma patient. This group of experts understands the intricacies of this rare disease and is focused on developing new treatments to improve each patient’s prognosis. The personalized care provided by the center includes a dedicated nurse navigator and scheduled weekly meetings to review the patient’s progress.

The center is committed to implementing new approaches to mesothelioma, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies and clinical trials. One of the hallmark features of treatment at the center is the use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC). HIPEC releases heated chemotherapy directly to the abdomen to destroy cancer cells following surgery to excise the tumor. HIPEC differs from traditional chemotherapy because it targets cancer cells located in the abdomen rather than circulating treatment throughout the body. This method of chemotherapy delivery also enables clinicians to use higher doses of chemotherapy to more accurately attack diseased cells while minimizing exposure to healthy areas of the body.

The mesothelioma center at the University of Chicago is led by Dr. Hedy Lee Kindler, M.D. She is the medical director of gastrointestinal oncology and a leading clinician in the treatment of malignant mesothelioma. Dr. Kindler’s focus on mesothelioma care began after the death of her father from mesothelioma in 2001. Since then, caring for mesothelioma patients has become her passion. Dr. Kindler treats approximately 100 mesothelioma patients every year. One of her missions is to educate the global community on the dangers of asbestos exposure. Dr. Kindler is striving to spread the word about the use of asbestos products in foreign countries and the potential health crisis associated with prolonged exposure.

Dr. Kindler has spent years investigating novel drugs for the treatment of malignant mesothelioma. In one of the studies overseen by Dr. Kindler, clinicians administered high doses of chemotherapeutic drugs to treat advanced carcinoma. Dr. Kindler also conducted a trial that resulted in using pemetrexed and cisplatin as a combined treatment for some mesothelioma patients.

Many clinical trials at the University of Chicago are conducted in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Clinical trails at every phase are ongoing. One of the clinical studies at the center has been examining subjects with pleural mesothelioma with low argininosuccinate synthetase. These patients were given ADI-PEG 20, an arginine degrading enzyme, to see whether cancerous mesothelioma cells can be starved and destroyed.

In another innovative study sponsored by NCI, researchers are investigating whether treatment that involves genetic testing is successful in those patients presenting with solid tumors. The genetic material of the patient’s tumor is analyzed. Researchers then determine whether those with detected genetic abnormalities fare better when exposed to specific treatments that focus on the tumor’s genetic irregularity.
