History- In 2010, Dr. Lebenthal began building a comprehensive mesothelioma program at the West Roxbury campus of the VA Boston. His purpose was to provide treatment to veterans that was inaccessible to Veterans across the country. Dr. Lebenthal has used his affiliations with the Brigham and Women’s International Mesothelioma Program, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical School and incorporated into the program.

Team- Dr. Lebenthal leads a multidisciplinary team consisting of surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, nurses, therapists. The team is dedicated to providing the best care for all Veterans afflicted with mesothelioma.

Affiliations– Brigham and Women’s Hospital International Mesothelioma Program and Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School

Stats- Started in 2010-have seen Veterans from all over New England and from 15 states with mesothelioma

Research- The mesothelioma program collaborates with ongoing research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston

Support Services- Social worker for Fisher House 857 203 4000. Fisher House is a refuge where family or caregivers can stay while a patient is having surgery.

Social services for patients who are having surgery- Amy Au 857 364 5853. If you have a need please reach out. She also can help with accommodations at the Huntington House as well.

Huntington House is a home where patient and caregivers can stay while recovering from treatment. The Huntington House provides housing for approximately 30 families. Each family is provided with a bedroom and most share bathrooms and kitchen. There is a cafeteria in the Jamaica Plain VA Hospital where meals are available.

A large population of Dr. Lebenthal’s patients will contact him initially. As you have seen his number is available to the patients. After Dr. Lebenthal has had a conversation with the patient he will usually ask them to send their CD over to the West Roxbury VA Hospital. Patient will get enrolled with the VA system in Boston and administration will gather the files from other VA Hospitals. A meeting will be set up and patient will meet with a nurse practitioner and tests will be ordered. This usually takes 2-3 days to complete. The VA hospital will also provide transportation to Boston as well as housing. After testing is done an appointment with Dr. Lebenthal will be made and treatment options will be discussed.
