MESOTHELIOMA SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT: DR. DANIEL H. STERMAN, MD

Dr. Daniel Sterman MesotheliomaDr. Daniel H. Sterman specializes in interventional pulmonology – which combines pulmonary (lung) medicine with thoracic (upper body) surgery – and sees patients at NYU Langone Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates and Perlmutter Cancer Center (both in New York City). The focus of his approach is to diagnose and treat chest cancers using minimally invasive procedures. Sterman wears many hats at NYU Langone, not least of which is his leadership as director of the Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Oncology Program. He also is a professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Director of the Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Oncology Program, and Director of the Division of Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine.

Sterman was previously the president of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group and former member of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation’s scientific advisory board.

In his practice, Sterman regularly diagnoses and treats people with lung cancer, pleura mesothelioma (cancer of the lung’s lining), and pleural effusion (a buildup of fluid between the pleura membranes). He also helps diagnose and manage various cancers affecting the trachea, bronchi, and other parts making up the airways of the lungs. Other conditions and treatments with which he has extensive experience include tracheal stenosis, mediastinal tumors, lung mass, adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lung, malignant mesothelioma, thymus cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer.

Not content to simply rely on medical science, Sterman makes it a point to have an initial in-depth conversation with his patients about their medical histories, including talks with family members. He then applies what he has learned to the patient’s physical examination results, imaging tests, and discussions with colleagues when drafting a diagnostic or treatment plan. In fact, both NYU Langone and Perlmutter are committed to holistic, patient-centered approaches to care. For instance, new patients are given the opportunity to meet with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and thoracic surgeons during the same visit in order to get all of the information they need to better understand their treatment options.

Additionally, Sterman has spent nearly two decades researching uses of gene therapy and immunotherapy to treat chest tumors, lung cancer, and malignant pleural mesothelioma. He also has conducted research into tumor vaccines and the treatment of thoracic malignancies in general. The focus of his research has been on the translation of discoveries in the laboratory “from the bench to the bedside.” For instance, he and his team have conducted human clinical trials of gene therapy and vaccine therapy for the treatment of mesothelioma, lung cancer, and related thoracic illnesses.

Currently, Sterman is in the process of developing clinical trials to test the delivery of the interferon-alpha gene (substances with potent antiviral and immunity-boosting properties) in combination with standard chemotherapy. He also has been active in research toward the development of advanced techniques for the treatment of severe asthma, emphysema, and post-operative leaks in the airway.
